Biography: The De Bry family published some of the greatest collections of travel narratives of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Theodor de Bry (1528-1598), the father, started off in life as a goldsmith and engraver. When the first accounts of Dutch, Spanish and English explorers in Asia and the Americas were issued in the 1580s, he became interested in producing illustrated editions. It was not until he was in his sixties that he published his first great set of books, America, or Les grands voyages. This monumental compilation documents the European discoveries in the Americas. The second set, India Orientalis, deals with the exploration of the East Indies. Theodor died well before it was completed and his sons, Johann Theodor (1561-1623) and Johann Israel (d.1611) issued this large set, also known as Les petits voyages, on early voyages to the East Indies. It is unique in its wealth of maps and illustrations of Africa, India, the Spice Islands, and South Asia.
